Oh, When?

Jareer Abu-Haidar

أي متى؟ · جوير ابو حيدر

Ah, my Lord, oh when will my soul be filled,
When the sorrow of my tomorrow is the gloom of my yesterday?
Oh when shall I wake drunken, while my cup
Stays brimming forever with red?

Oh when shall I wake enchanted, and pass the evening
Forgetting the waves of my shrouds and my tomb?
Oh when shall I step out rejoicing upon
The grave of my hopes, my dreams, and my despair?

Oh when shall I be quit of my luck and my misfortune,
Leaving to the people my dinar and my fils?
Oh when will my eyelid fasten upon the sky,
So it may show me the blaze of my lights and my strength?
