Shatter the Memory

Samir Sanbar

حطمي الذكرى · سمير صنبر

To a phantom that appeared to me... in the night!!

Shatter the memory: tomorrow our songs shall perish... the tender ones
And the blood of the grape-cluster shall not water our vines... the mournful ones
And the breeze of the rose shall not tell of our meeting... in its sweetness
And the moaning of the flute shall not lament our hopes... the beloved ones

These days may turn to phantoms... that vanish
My drunken rapture tomorrow becomes moans... that melt away
My thirsting heart calls in the evenings... for the beloved
It will fold me away, and fade like the rays... of sunset

So hold me now within your eyes, and sleep... do not wake
Out of your eyes I have fashioned my longing... and my nectar
And press my heart, and in my senses flutter... like a bird set free
For tomorrow I depart, and in my eyes are my fragrance... and my road
