الاتحاد اللبناني لرعاية الطفل يحتفل بيوم الطفل العالمي

* The Lebanese Union for Child Welfare celebrated World Children's Day on Monday, October 5, in step with the International Union for Child Welfare and the other member children's unions throughout the world.

The celebration took place in the UNESCO hall and took on a semi-official character, for His Excellency the President of the Republic consented to place the ceremony under his patronage, and deputized His Excellency Kazem al-Khalil, the Minister of Health, to deliver the opening address.

After him spoke Messrs. Hamid Frangieh and Father Cortbawi, Mrs. Alice Nahhas, Dr. Jamal Harfush, president of the Lebanese Union for Child Welfare, and Mr. Georges Shahla and Wasef Baroudi — most of them people who have dealt with the problems of childhood in a practical way and have headed the charitable institutions that endeavor to solve children's questions positively, following the most modern methods practiced in the advanced countries.

At this meeting the government approved the adoption of the Charter of the Child issuing from the United Nations, known as the Geneva Charter, which pledges work for the protection of childhood from disease and misery and for the securing of the necessary food and clothing, without distinction of sex, religion, or color. The text of the Charter of the Child was read out clause by clause and was received with great approval.

The address of Mrs. Alice Nakkash, president of Juvenile Protection, set out in detail the needs of the Lebanese child in the social field and the possibilities available in the various circles.

As for the president of the Lebanese Union for Child Welfare, Dr. Jamal Karam Harfush, her subject was: the needs of the Lebanese child in the field of health.
