The Anniversary of the Death of Malak Hifni Nasif, "Bahithat al-Badiya"

* The twelfth of last October marked the thirty-fifth anniversary of the death of Malak Hifni Nasif, known by the pen name "Bahithat al-Badiya."

Malak Hifni Nasif was a bold writer on social questions who had mastered, besides Arabic, both French and English. She followed in the footsteps of Qasim Amin in striking at the problems of home and society, and especially the delicate problems surrounding the conflict between man and woman and the call for the emancipation of woman.

She treated her subjects with understanding and moderation, urging the Muslim woman to seek learning and to come out of her isolation and stagnation.

Radio Lebanon, in its weekly "Woman's Talk," held a special program in memory of Bahithat al-Badiya, in which Mrs. Emily Fares Ibrahim spoke.

The Fortieth-Day Memorial of Salma Sayegh

... On the occasion of the fortieth-day memorial of Salma Sayegh, Radio Lebanon will hold a special program under the supervision of the director of the women's program, Mrs. Edvick Jureidini Shayboub, on Friday evening, November 13, at 7:20, in the segment "The Woman's Talk."

Likewise, Mrs. Laure Tabet, president of the League of Women's Organizations in Lebanon, has invited representatives of the women's associations and of the "People of the Pen" association to consult on the names of the speakers, men and women, who will address the fortieth-day memorial of Salma Sayegh in mid-November; it is understood that strong voices will take part in this ceremony.

* Preparations at The Woman's Voice are still in full swing for the coming issue devoted to Salma Sayegh. Letters, personal and general, have been sent to a select group of men of letters and of the writer's contemporaries and friends, men and women, inviting them to share in this duty, and the replies are pouring in by the dozens...

The Woman's Voice, while thanking the writers and friends for their kind response, has great hope of bringing out the Salma Sayegh issue in an elegant form worthy of the standing of the departed woman of letters.
