A Tear of Fidelity
... Here is a tear of fidelity, in which Mrs. Zaheya Ayoub bade her friend farewell at the graveside, among the grieving throngs...
I wonder — in the name of which body do I stand before your bier to eulogize you?
Shall I eulogize you in the name of your many pupils, scattered here and there, who will shed generous tears over you?
Or shall I eulogize you in the name of the teaching fellowship — that field in which you wore out your great heart, your sound judgment, your singular thought?
Or shall I presume, and eulogize you in the name of literature, in which you were mistress of felicitous excursions, of fragrant “Breezes,” of immortal “Memories”?
Or in the name of the women's associations, of which you were among the very first founders — above all that society, Al-Nahda An-Nisaiyah, to which you were my guide on the day I first looked out upon working life beneath the sky of this dear homeland?
I see that I have the right to weep for you in the name of all these bodies together, for you filled the air of my country with your splendid personality, your mighty thought, and your fruitful struggle. I weep for you — rather, we weep for you — generously and warmly, because you gave of yourself generously and warmly.
Ah, Salma!
O mistress of the pen — of which it was said that with it you knew how to remain a woman.
And O lady of elegant speech — in which you proved that a soft voice has an effect upon hearts that cannot be rivaled.
We shall all miss you, whenever we remember lessons we took from you in the various fields of work.
The country will remember you whenever its need grows keen for active, working women who know how to forget themselves for the sake of their country.
So sleep, beloved, your calm, eternal sleep. You wore your soul thin in this life; perhaps the second life will be gentler with you, and will recompense you for this one, which was so often cruel to you, and in which you sacrificed so much of yourself.
Salma! Farewell, faithful friend — and a thousand greetings of peace!
