★ The Cooperative Society of the American University Hospital held, on November 20 at the Bristol Hotel, a great fashion show, the proceeds of which go to reviving the hospital's finances, aiding the poor among the sick, and buying medicines for them.

The president and members of the society — all of whom belong to families of doctors and senior staff of the American hospital — busied themselves contacting the biggest fashion houses to secure the show. The "Profil" house of dressmaking and fashion, owned by Miss Haifa Fares, presented the latest autumn fashions; the "Marina" shop presented fur coats; and the children's clothes were provided by the Zahar establishment.

★ At the orphanage of the Society for Securing Work for the Palestine Refugees, a great expansion has come to the handwork and sewing department. The number of boarding students has reached 40 and of day students 150, and a new branch has been opened for instruction in typewriting. A revival has been noted in the orphanage's finances, its source a gift of twenty thousand lira from Emir Saud (he is now King); and there have come to them from Iraq orders and commissions for large quantities of handwork, which the department labors to complete on time.

It is worth saying that this institute goes forward by the energy of an elite of generous ladies, at their head Mrs. Nazik al-Abid Beyhum, who has never ceased to give of her time, her money, and her activity for the sake of the project.

★ Dr. Salwa Nassar, head of the Physics Department at the American University of Beirut, returned to Beirut last month after heading Lebanon's delegation to the Arab Scientific Congress recently convened in Cairo.

At this congress, Dr. Salwa Nassar drew all eyes by her intelligence and her mastery of the higher sciences, physics above all; and in appreciation of her distinguished scientific standing she presided over several of the congress's sessions, and her proposals were taken into consideration.

* Thursday, the nineteenth of last November, fell on the noble feast of the Prophet's Birth, and the Muslims celebrated it in the East of the earth and in its West, while the whole world joined them in celebrating the majesty of this noble memory, radiant in the history of mankind — the memory of the leader who marched his nation toward glory, and the Messenger who carried to the nations the torch of guidance, illuminating their minds and their sight, and who traced a straight path, his life an example to men.

The Woman's Voice seizes this happy occasion to offer its sincere congratulations to the noble Muslim community, and prays God to bring this Prophetic anniversary round again upon the Muslims and upon the Arabs with goodness, dignity, and glory.

* On Sunday morning, November 15, a ceremony was held at the National Library to commemorate the departed woman of letters, Salma Sayegh. The invitation to the ceremony came from the Ahl al-Qalam Society and the League of Women's Organizations in Lebanon.

The speakers at this ceremony, in succession, were:

Mr. Salah al-Asir, vice-president of the Ahl al-Qalam Society.

Dr. Najib Sadaka, director general of the Ministry of National Education (on behalf of the Minister).

Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura, president of the General Arab Women's Union.

Mrs. Ellen Rihan, for the League of Women's Organizations.

Mrs. Najla Kfoury, for the Al-Nahda An-Nisaiyah society.

Mr. Mohammad Jamil Beyhum.

Mrs. Emily Fares Ibrahim, for the Ahl al-Qalam Society.

Dr. Constantine Zurayk, vice-president of the American University of Beirut.

And Mr. Salah Labaki, president of the Ahl al-Qalam Society.

Included in this issue are the addresses of Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura, Mrs. Najla Kfoury, Mrs. Emily Fares Ibrahim, and Mr. Salah Labaki — and on this occasion the editors apologize for not publishing all the material that has reached us, for lack of space.

★ The administration of the American University of Beirut has taken up its customary concern for holding permanent art exhibitions for the rising generation of our Lebanese artists, men and women, in "West Hall." December 12 will see the opening of the third exhibition of the artist Nabila George, in which she shows her watercolors and her handwork; the show continues a full week, ending on the twentieth of the month.

In encouragement of art and its people, the exhibition of the artist Nabila George will be under the patronage of the League of Women's Organizations in Lebanon, presided over by Mrs. Laure Tabet, which wishes Miss George every success and good fortune...

★ Homs — God has favored Mr. Munir al-Khoury Issa and his lady wife with a baby boy, whom they have named "Malik" as a good omen, after the name of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan.

The Woman's Voice raises to the two generous parents its sincerest congratulations, and wishes little "Malik" a life of plenty and of honor.
