Look at your face in the mirror, then wrinkle your forehead and raise your eyebrows as far as you can. Do you see a flat or hollow space, in the shape of a horseshoe, between the eyebrows, just above the nose?...
Dr. "Henniken" discovered this sign in 88% of the headache cases he examined over a period of four years, and he believes that his recognition of this mark helps him in diagnosing the ailment.
This space is free of wrinkling; it widens at the upper forehead, then narrows below, forming the figure of a horseshoe.
I knew a young woman whom headaches had haunted since childhood. The pain would begin behind her right eye, until it affected her sight, and faintness and vomiting would seize her whenever she felt the pain. When she visited the doctor to have her ailment diagnosed, it was quite easy for him, for the sign showed on her forehead, and the psychological indications that appear in every such patient showed on her as well. The doctor also noticed, while making a sea voyage, the horseshoe shape on the brow of a steward, and after lunch he was able to
obtain a running history of the headaches that had accompanied the man's life.
Are you one of the thousands who suffer this type of headache? No human being is immune, but it occurs for the most part among individuals above the average in intelligence and in burning emotion.
George Eliot and Richard Wagner used to suffer from this type of headache, as happens to many others. The doctor noticed it while watching a television broadcast: the singer's brow wrinkled in the middle of a sweet love song, and the horseshoe shape appeared plainly on her forehead; he noticed it too on the face of a stranger at a
"cocktail" party.
This shape is not a visible mark in the frontal bone, nor in the furrow of the frown; it is, as this doctor declared, a space in the flesh — perhaps the trace of Mother Nature's fingers upon the brows of thousands of human beings. The presence of the horseshoe helps the doctor to diagnose the ailment, just as it enables the patient to know himself.
## The Effect of Sounds
Which sound affects your soul the most? A woman's scream? The traffic policeman's whistle, or the barking of a dog in the stillness of night?...
A group of psychologists recently determined the sounds that appear more affecting than others, and added that the harmony of our feeling and our thinking with a sound clothes it in that evocative image which we sense when a strange feeling stirs in our breast on hearing certain sounds — a feeling that ranges from happiness, gaiety, and emotion to fear, sadness, and loneliness.
Here is the list of sounds according to their evocative value. Try to draw up your own list, arranging the sounds as you see fit, and adding others of your own:
1 — The cry of a baby at the hour of its birth. 2 — The whistle of the police or the firemen, or the siren of the sick-wagon, the "ambulance"? 3 — The roar of the waves on a quiet shore? 4 — The hiss of fire in the forest? 5 — The moaning of the winds on rainy nights? 6 — The fall of water in a brook? 7 — The whinnying of a troop of horses? 8 — Footsteps in the calm of night? 9 — The whistle of the railway train. 10 — The barking of a dog.
To these you can add: a woman's scream, the crack of gunfire, the bursting of tires, the croaking of frogs... So which sound has your choice fallen upon?..
