I spent my day absent-minded, thinking and thinking again. It was she, without a doubt, for upon my life I knew no one else — or thought of no one else. And the appointed hour came, after a day's waiting that I took for a year. I entered the café and withdrew to one side; it was a little before four o'clock, and I began to watch those who came in, with the eye of a night-watcher who has never known sleep... Suddenly in came the friend, with some companions... I wished the earth would split open and swallow me, so that they might not see me. But one of them caught sight of me, and they all made toward me. They sat down, and I sat down on thorns, watching the entrance and counting the minutes — the seconds, rather. Four o'clock passed and she did not come; and my friends noticed how far away my mind was from them, and winked at one another, then laughed as long as God let them laugh, and their voices rose.. while I was too preoccupied for them — what was the matter with them, and what business had I with them — and my waiting dragged on...
The story of the letter was a hoax concocted by my most loyal friend — that devil to whom I had entrusted my secret and poured out my complaint. Yet I had not doubted that letter for a single moment, though I thought, and thought long.

Here she is now, sitting before me, with her blue eyes, and her golden hair falling over her shoulders, and she has put on a black gown for the evening party.
