Mrs. Zahia Salman's Appeal to Observe "Child Day" on March 21
Zahia Salman

Greetings and respect. The Child Welfare Society has been working for 17 years to bring cheer to poor children who are under school age, and especially the children of working mothers, by opening free day nurseries for them in all parts of the city.

The society has been accustomed each year to observe a special day which it calls "Child Day," on which donations are gathered from the charitable in return for a special badge distributed by volunteers, young men and women of the educational institutes and the organizations. It is striving to make this day a national holiday in Lebanon, in which all classes take part, each contributing according to his capacity, and in whatever way he sees fit, to bring joy and gladness to children in general, and to work for the care of a great company of poor children whom we want strong and educated, not weak and vagrant.

Child Day this year falls on Sunday, March 21, 1954.

Our society is prefacing this day with a week which it calls "Child Week," whose programs it will present over Radio Lebanon, and in which the Ministries of Health, Education, and Social Affairs will take part, along with a number of workers in the field of social service, the children of the society's free kindergarten, and other children besides.

Child Day has been celebrated in the past in Beirut, Tripoli, Sidon, and Zahle. This year we have approached most of the other Lebanese cities and villages, and we are full of hope that they will answer our request and join us in observing this day.

Lebanon Signs the United Nations Convention on Women's Political Rights

• On February 24, Dr. Charles Malik signed, in the name of the Lebanese government, the United Nations convention on the political rights of women. Lebanon is the thirty-fourth state to sign this convention, and may not much time pass before Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and all the Arab countries add their signatures, so that we may take a firm stand on our other civil and social questions, which lead in the end to absolute equality between man and woman.

The Engagement of Miss Nahla Marwa

At a simple family party held last month, the engagement was concluded of Miss Nahla Marwa to the agricultural engineer Hasan Shuman.

Miss Nahla Marwa is one of our most active educated young women; she has shone in the field of culture and in her handling of the problems of childhood. Her fiancé is a modern farmer, of broad culture. All who have seen the two young fiancés together agree that the perfect harmony between them is warrant enough of complete family happiness — the first thing we wish for our close friend Miss Nahla Marwa. We promise our readers to publish a picture of the bridal pair as soon as the festivities are complete — perhaps in a few months to come...
