Dr. Najla Izzeddin's Book "The Arab World"

There recently appeared in America, in the English language, the book "The Arab World" by Dr. Najla Izzeddin, holder of the degree of doctor of history from "Harvard" University in America. She spent six years in composing the book, and it has come out as a faithful, detailed account of the history of the Arab world: its past, its present, and its future.

"The Arab World" was published by one of the great publishing houses in Chicago, and it carries a foreword by William Hocking, professor of philosophy at Harvard University and one of the great leaders of thought in America. The book was received in America with a wave of appreciation and astonishment, and was reckoned "Book of the Month" for December; publishing companies are now on the way to translating it into German and Arabic.

Dr. Najla Izzeddin is now preparing to travel at the beginning of March to the United States, in answer to the invitation of certain great clubs, to deliver a series of lectures on the margins of the book's subjects. In preparation for this journey, the author made several trips to the Arab countries to supply herself with the latest information on the developments in each country...

It is without doubt a great pride for Lebanon, and for all the Arabs, that a Lebanese young lady should win world fame with a book that has met, from the moment of its publication, with such appreciation and respect. We congratulate our friend Dr. Izzeddin on this great work, and we congratulate ourselves on her!

Sarmad Rihani!

Word reached us, as the magazine was going to press, of the glad tidings that Mrs. Loreen, wife of Mr. Albert Rihani, has given birth to a brother for Ameen, May, and Ramzi... on Monday, February 22.

And when Mrs. Shayboub

returned to her house at noon on the twenty-fourth of February, she was surprised by a gift sent from Mr. Albert Rihani, consisting of "a chicken and a kmaje"! As for the reason for this "reversed" gift, which was received with the heartiest welcome, it is that the parents of the new baby chose for him the name "Sarmad" — a name borne in this country by no one but Mrs. Shayboub's firstborn!! The friend of both parties, Mrs. Anissa Najjar, had impressed it upon them — in keeping with the established custom, which she relates on the authority of her grandmother! — that it was a

duty to send "the chicken and the kmaje!" And she went further, whispering in Mrs. Shayboub's ear that the gift lacks "the servant without wages!!" — which, of course, surpasses in importance "the chicken and the kmaje!"

So The Woman's Voice, as it offers its warmest congratulations to the two dear friends Mr. Albert Rihani and his wife Mrs. Loreen, assures its readers that "Sarmad" is a beautiful name, and that borrowing it is permissible — indeed, desirable — on condition of abiding by the terms laid down by that "wise" lady, Mrs. Anissa Najjar!!
