Children Who Look Like Angels

There is a close bond between art and the French people settled in Canada, in the lands of North America. This bond was created by the French sculptors who struck out on new paths in art, drawing their inspiration from the circles of the common people, and thereby leaving behind what is known as classical art, which most European artists followed. In these statues are images that reveal the sincerity of an artistic spirit which sprang from the depths, to take bodily form in paintings and statues.

The lens recorded this scene when the

photographer was struck by the strange resemblance between the statue and the children who had gathered round to gaze at it. It represents the Child Jesus, and was carved in wood a hundred years ago; and this little girl is from the artist's own province — the artist who followed the practice of his contemporaries in taking his models from the children of the people, not from passing fancy!
