The Party of the Zahle Child Nursery Society, and the Election of Miss Lebanon 1954

• The Zahle Child Nursery Society held a grand party in the hall of Cinema Dunia, attended by the Ministers of the Interior and of Agriculture and a throng of leading citizens and men of the press; the party was nourished by artistic and literary numbers of excellence.

The party was opened by the society's president, Mrs. Emily Nasrallah, who welcomed those present and thanked them for their kind encouragement, and spoke of the humanitarian mission the society performs toward the children of Lebanon, without distinction of race or sect.

Then Mr. Najib Hankash came forward with a new production of his biting comic numbers, which set everyone laughing and put them from the very start in an atmosphere of cheerfulness and good spirits.

Tahiya Carioca rose and danced, with her beautiful figure, the

most marvelous of dances to the rhythms of her body, and surprised the audience with the great dancer Badia Masabni, whom they applauded long.

Odette Kaado sang her beloved country songs, of Abu al-Zuluf and mijana; and after her Mr. Said Freiha, proprietor of our colleague al-Sayyad, delivered an address in which he praised the society and its struggle. The party closed with the voice of the Blackbird of the Cedars — and it was as if all Beirut had stayed up that night: it sang, and laughed, and danced...

• The management of al-Jarida and L'Orient — following its custom of every year — held a grand evening party in the hall of

the Lebanese-American Club for the election of Miss Lebanon for the year 1954.

The judging committee elected Miss Colette Riachi, daughter of Mr. Iskandar Riachi, 'Queen' of Lebanese beauty for the year 1954, and consequently ambassadress of Lebanese beauty to London, to take part in the contest for the election of Miss World. 'The Woman's Voice,' which believes in these organized parties as a means of publicity for Lebanon, congratulates Miss Colette Riachi, wishing her ample luck in the world contest, and congratulates likewise the management of al-Jarida and L'Orient on devising this charming women's activity every year.
