• Miss Samira Azzam, supervisor of the women's program at the Near East Arab Broadcasting Station, has returned to Beirut from Cyprus, her work having been transferred to the Beirut office. A hearty welcome to our literary friend, with our warmest wishes for a pleasant and lasting stay among her family and friends; and may she be able, amid the limpid Lebanese air, to double her literary output, so that "The Woman's Voice" may catch of its spray even more than came its way before...
After an absence of two months for compelling reasons, our colleague the magazine al-Kashshaf has returned to regular publication, in a substantial issue containing varied articles, every one of them engaging, that will bring abundant good to the scouting movement.
Enclosed with the issue of al-Kashshaf is an elegant copy of the lecture Mr. Said Akl delivered at the beginning of this year at the American University of Beirut, under the title: 'The Problem of the Elite in the East.'
'The Woman's Voice,' as it congratulates its colleague on her return to the field of the noble scouting struggle, offers its sincerest thanks and appreciation for the precious gift which carries between its two covers the distillation of profound modern thought — the best of guides for our rising generation...
A valuable book written by the distinguished Mr. Mohammad Jamil Beyhum, in which he has recorded the policy of the United States toward the Arab states. This book includes a detailed analysis of the Palestine question and the
circumstances that have surrounded it; and the book contains several chapters and historical documents which everyone concerned with Arab politics ought to read.
The author has promised to translate this book into English, so that American public opinion may read it. We congratulate the worthy author, from whose literary production we have been accustomed to nothing but the loftiest, the finest, and the most useful.
• During the last five days of this past April the Fourth Conference on Arab Studies was held at the American University of Beirut, presided over this year by Dr. Nicola Ziadeh. Lectures were given, in the order set down in the program, by each of the following:
1 — Mr. Mikhail Naimy, on: The Nature of Literature.
2 — Mr. Mahmoud Taymur, on: The Story in Modern Arabic Literature.
3 — Mr. Ibrahim al-Urayyid, on: Modern Arabic Poetry and Its Cause.
4 — Dr. Jibrail Jabbur, on: Arabic Criticism.
A great throng was observed at these lectures, and a surpassing enthusiasm in the discussion circles, which were confined to the members of the conference. It is thus fair to say that these conferences — which aim at raising the questions of thought on a broad
scale among the people of letters and of thought, at the hands of men of specialization and wide experience — have become an event awaited every year at this season, when the company gathers, and the circles of writers, after their necklace has come unstrung and they have scattered to their various occupations, turn to the exchange of views and the debating of theories; and understanding spreads among the writers of Arabic everywhere, that they may know their true condition, take stock of where we stand, whether straight or crooked, and prescribe the remedy if possible...
We congratulate the American University of Beirut on the brilliant success achieved by the Conference on Arab Studies.
• The third of May marks the beginning of Lebanese Red Cross Week. The society's leading members will conduct an organized financial campaign to collect donations, and His Excellency the President of the Republic will open Lebanese Red Cross Week in the hall of the Capitol Cinema.
The Woman's Voice appeals to its gracious readers to take part in this benevolent campaign — in support of the greatest humanitarian enterprise undertaken by woman in Lebanon —
On this occasion we publish, elsewhere in this issue, the story of the founder of the Red Cross, Henri Dunant.
