The Munjidat Conference in Tripoli and the Young Muslim Women's Association Kermis

مؤتمر المنجدات في طرابلس وكرمس جمعية الشابات المسلمات

• Seventy-five girls from the Munjidat troops attached to the Young Women's Christian Association took part in a conference held at the Greek Orthodox school in Tripoli from April 22 to 24. The subject of the conference was "The Girl at the Age of Adolescence," and the motto around which the discussion turned was "I Am Growing."

The conference opened on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 22. Dr. Mary Karam gave a lecture, accompanying it with the showing of a film on the mental and physical growth that comes to the girl at the age of adolescence. Then, on the two following days, the discussions turned on the same subject, based on a number of questions which the girls had placed in a special box. The deliberations took place in small circles with the counselors, after a discussion had been held of the ten most important questions, which were answered by a panel of mothers, teachers, school principals, and counselors invited especially for this purpose.

Nor was the conference confined to study and work: it also included entertaining family evenings and a short excursion outside the town, which gave scope for acquaintance among the various troops that had come from Tyre, Marjayoun, Beirut, Tripoli, and Jibrayel.

• And on the first of May the Young Muslim Women's Association, presided over by Mrs. Habiba Shaaban Yakan, held, under the supervision of the cultural committee, a "kermis" at the International Club, at which were offered for sale all sorts of foods and refreshments, and the girls' own products of handwork and objects of art... The party was interspersed with amusing games led by the members of the association and their friends. The proceeds of the kermis went toward founding a library and making improvements in the literary club, in fulfillment of the association's humane and artistic aim, and in deference to the wishes of the young women — the girls among them — who yearn to redouble the cultural effort, so that the club may carry out its cultural mission in the fullest manner...
