His Excellency the President of the Republic; His Excellency the Prime Minister attended, with a great company of society's foremost people.
Radio Lebanon broadcast the proceedings of the gala, which was rich in the artistic numbers dear to the people's heart.
At the opening, Mrs. Edma Izzat Joumblatt delivered a rousing address in which she paid tribute to the charitable and humane works performed by the Druze Orphanage. After her, Sheikh Munir Takieddine, director general of the Ministry of National Defense, gave a speech of encouragement, praising the commendable efforts exerted by the Women's Committee of the Druze Orphanage to take these deprived little ones by the hand and smooth the road before them to a better and happier life. Then the singers came on in turn — Halim al-Roumi, Najah Salam, Mohammed Salman, and Marie Ataya — and storms of applause calling for encores rent the very heavens; and the evening closed with Tahia Carioca in her splendid Oriental dance...
It is worth mentioning that every one of these artists donated voice or dance to the Orphanage; likewise the government, through the director general of the Ministry of Information, Mr. Halim Abu Izz al-Din, donated three thousand liras, after which the heat of enthusiasm rose higher still and donations poured in from open-handed benefactors, to the finest effect.
• As for the American School for Girls in Beirut, this year it sent out invitations to its ninety-second commencement — which makes it the oldest institution for girls in this country without exception — and across all these years it has gone on serving girls, not from Lebanon alone but from all the Arab and Eastern lands.
With entire simplicity the diplomas were distributed to the graduating girls amid the choir of singers and the strains of music.
• The National College at
Choueifat held its sixty-eighth annual celebration on June 23, under the patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Camille Chamoun.
The celebration was distinguished by its order and arrangement and by the pleasant atmosphere shed over it by its president, Mr. Charles Saad, and his wife, Mrs. Leila. The orator of the day was Mr. Nasri Maalouf, whose splendid address made the sweetest impression; and so, too, did the speech of the president. After the distribution of diplomas to the graduating boys and girls, and their singing of the most stately
and polished patriotic anthems, His Excellency the President rose and drew back the curtain from the statue of the college's founder, the Reverend Tanios Saad, amid a storm of applause and cheering; the guests then repaired for refreshments and sweets to the new building, opened in the name of President Chamoun.
On this occasion His Excellency the President decorated Charles Saad with the gilt Lebanese Order of Merit, in recognition of his services to the rising Arab generation. To Mr. Charles Saad our warmest congratulations, so richly deserved.
