Death folded away, at dawn on Saturday, August 14, a noble face of Lebanon: Mrs. Julia Tu'mah Dimashqiyah, widow of Mr. Badr Dimashqiyah, former president of the Friends of the Tree Association, and mother of Mr. Nadim Dimashqiyah, Lebanon's Minister Plenipotentiary in Egypt. Her body was borne to rest in a solemn cortege in which the government was represented, and vast crowds streamed forth to bid her the last farewell. In the Evangelical Church, Mr. Fuad Sarruf, vice-president of the American University of Beirut, eulogized her in an eloquent address, in which he set forth the departed lady's lofty qualities and the glorious works she rendered to the social and intellectual renaissance.
The death of Julia Dimashqiyah
is a grievous loss to Lebanon and the Arabs. With her passing there has gone out, in the world of woman, a light far-reaching in its radiance, constant in its giving, surpassing in its love.
Dead is the mother of Lebanon's women of letters and the educator of the generation; dead the enchanting conversationalist and the pioneer of women's journalism. The pains that bore hard upon her, and persisted in their harshness, did not keep her from leading the women's renaissance, and its intellectual side in particular. She brought out the magazine "The New Woman" throughout the third decade of this century, overcoming, with an unconquerable resolve, the obstacles of society and of tradition; she melted down her pen and her mind for the sake of the happiness of
the Arab family and the raising of its level, through her famous editorials under the title "To the Daughter of My Country."
And from her bed, through the last twenty years, she taught and guided and encouraged, in a tone of sincere ardor and with a positive will that acknowledged no faltering. She had set about writing her book, "From the Essence of Dawn," recording her observations and her impressions of the important developments that accompanied the first half of this century; but illness pressed hard upon her, and has deprived us, now that she is gone, of the completion of this precious literary treasure.
In fulfillment of its pledge, the magazine "The Woman's Voice" will bring out its coming issue in memory of our dear departed one.
