In the Wilds of Africa

في مجاهل افريقيا

It is courage and the love of adventure that guide their steps!

This scene was not taken from a cinema film; it is fact, showing the courage of woman, who has left no door unknocked — not even the wilds of Africa!

This expedition was organized by an American girl named "Beverly Yuthan," who announced it with this phrase: "Is there any woman who will go to Africa?" And she added to the announcement: "The number wanted is fifteen women, their ages between 28 and 38; the expenses for the month come to two thousand five hundred dollars."

This young lady intended to visit Africa and wanted company, which she was quick to find; the first thing she thought of was to find a white man expert in the haunts of game, and she got the very man who guided "Ava Gardner" and "Clark Gable" in the film "Mogambo."

Four months passed from the date of the announcement, and the girls left America aboard an airplane that carried them over wastelands, seas, and jungles. The party included six married ladies and two divorced ladies, and the rest unmarried — the eldest of them nearing sixty and the youngest twenty-seven; they carried with them baggage and medicines, along with a bouquet of dreams and hopes.

The airplane passed by way of "Hamburg" and "Zurich," Rome, Athens, and Khartoum, and set down at "Nairobi" — Africa — where the guide of the expedition received them. Everyone rested a full day; then they set off for the forests, in the company of white hunters and forty slaves, with three motorcars and a "Jeep" carrier. They also brought refrigerators, a radio, and baths of hot and cold water.

The bag came to nineteen animals in the course of two weeks, and the whole party camped for three weeks, during which they saw the giraffe, the lion, and other wild animals and snakes, until the snows of "Kilimanjaro" came into view.

You ask about their food?... Every day they obtained fresh vegetables and fruit, and the meat of the animals they hunted, along with the canned goods that supplied them with ices, pickles, sweets, and drink.

The expedition was organized in a delightful fashion: they would rest after every round and hold circles of merriment and song, observing the rules laid down especially for this purpose.

In short, the expedition succeeded completely — except that not one of the ladies killed a lion, or one of her companions!... And Miss "Putman" is now taking a wide stride forward, thinking of organizing another tour this autumn, to hunt elephants. Will she succeed this time??
