This Season's Fashions

all his designs. For the collar he substitutes a ribbon tied in a knot that falls down the back.

The tailored suits are neither extremely full nor extremely tight; one may say of them that they are "close to the body." The cocktail dress is marked by a wide décolleté and the absence of sleeves and belt. The evening gown inclines to the short rather than to the long, as is usual.

Dior uses various kinds of fabric, from tweed to silky wool to shantung to faille and other fabrics suited to his designs. His favored colors this season are navy, which takes the place of black, beige, yellow, blue, and red; in general, this season's range of colors inclines to the bright rather than to the dark.

As for Jacques Heim, he has given his collection this season the name "Veut debout," or "the puff," which displays the beauties of a woman's figure without hampering her movements, so that the lady remains unconfined, free in her motion. With Heim the dress comes flat in front, with a perceptible fullness at the back, but visibly below the waist. The two-piece abounds in his collection, whether in dresses or in tailored suits, it being understood that the waist drops as far as the hips in most cases.

Heim agrees with Dior in replacing black with navy, and dark colors with bright ones.

This is something of what caught our eye in this season's fashions, besides the variations in designs which we keep in reserve for each of our ladies individually.

On the tongue of your child, or of your little brother, there pass sweet, charming sayings. Write them down and send them to us, with a picture of the child if possible. Our readers wish us to renew our attention to this delightful children's corner. — The Editors —

• Little Sanaa sometimes tells spontaneous little tales that carry "poetic" meanings... Among them: her mother looked in on her early one morning and, finding her, contrary to her habit, wide awake, hastened to ask her: — Did my moving about the room rouse you from your sleep? — No, Mama; I have been awake a long while — ever since... (and her eyes wandered as she thought how to fix the time; then she added:) ...ever since the night began to "wilt"!!

• And she is forever perplexed by this Arabic language. She wondered why, when the teacher read her composition aloud in class, all the pupils laughed at her writing: the head of the school and his "missus" (instead of his wife!!).
