The "Committee for Honoring Women Writers" Commemorates Salma Sayegh on June 7

We spoke in previous issues of the founding of the "Committee for Honoring Women Writers," and of its regular meetings held for a single aim: to honor our women writers in a positive way, embracing the living and the dead alike, without slighting anyone's due. The committee has begun its work, and the "Ahl al-Qalam Society" has graciously regarded it as an offshoot of itself.

The "Committee for Honoring Women Writers" has confined its program of work for this year to holding a memorial ceremony for the late Lebanese woman of letters Salma Sayegh, on Tuesday, June 7, at half past six, in the hall of the Ministry of Education, at which Mr. Edouard Honein will deliver a study of the departed lady, which will serve as the preface to the book the committee will shortly publish, containing selections from her reflections and her sweet memoirs, as yet unpublished, together with some of what has been said of Salma Sayegh — a book fit to serve as a high reference for students of Arabic in Lebanon and beyond.

The Committee for Honoring Women Writers has likewise approved the establishment of a "Salma Sayegh Chair" at the Lebanese University — a financial grant to be awarded each year to an outstanding girl student for specialization in Arabic literature — and the founding of an Arabic library in her name.

Afterward the committee will pass on to others among the departed women writers, such as "Mayy," Julia Tu'mah Dimashqiyah, Warda al-Yaziji, and others.

Literary circles have given the "Committee for Honoring Women Writers" the warmest of welcomes, for

it is the first project of its kind, aiming at a positive, constructive goal. God bless the ladies and gentlemen who direct it.

• "Al-Mu'assasa al-Ahliyya" is a printing and publishing house founded and directed by one of the friends of "The Woman's Voice," Miss Angele Abboud; its existence is an important event and fresh proof of woman's capability in every field of work..

Since beginning its work, not a month ago, al-Mu'assasa al-Ahliyya has given proof of

good order and taste.
