Samia el-Hage, Opera Singer
• Miss Samia el-Hage is a genuine Lebanese artist. I heard her sing at the American University of Beirut before her departure for Italy and France four years ago, and everyone predicted for her that day that she would have a standing — and what a standing — in the world of opera.
And yesterday Samia el-Hage returned to Beirut, and on Saturday night, May 21, she sang in the UNESCO Hall; she stirred hearts and took breaths away, and the audience flew into warm applause. In the coming issue, a detailed reportage on this artist, who is a great pride to Lebanon...
News That Doesn't Concern You
• Mrs. Evelyn Hitti Kanaan stands in the front rank of the enthusiasts of "The Woman's Voice." Forever a lover of renewal and creation, she surprises the editors from time to time with her inventions — enormous projects that outrun all our means. She is severe in calling us to account, and spurs us on to storm the thorniest paths boldly and without flinching...
It is true that the editor-in-chief takes, now and then, a few daring leaps — such as that referendum which "shook half the country," in Mrs. Kanaan's phrase — yet Mrs. Shayboub remains, in reality, "classical," as her friend Mrs. Abla al-Khoury likes to describe her!...
• One thing genuinely perplexing in the affairs of "The Woman's Voice" is that two of its readers cannot agree on the kind of material desired. Miss Thurayya Malhas, for instance, professor of Arabic literature at Beirut College for Women, proposes stripping it of the "silly" women's matter and replacing it with studies in fiction, literature, and the sciences... in other words, she wants it to
commit suicide!... While Mrs. Janette Tadros and her colleagues of the Lebanese Women's League would prefer for it illustrated reviews of parties and weddings, and light news for amusement...
God help the editor-in-chief to reconcile these contradictions and please everyone!!
• In the magazine's last issue, the photograph of Mr. Youssef al-Khal caught many eyes, and a number of questions reached us as to whether Mr. al-Khal resembles the famous writer "Hemingway"..
We reassure those lady readers who did not dare to ask that Mr. al-Khal has a wife and a son named "Tariq"!.. It would be well for the flutterings of their hearts to turn in another direction!!
