The Emigrants Come to Lebanon — Chafic Maalouf as Guest

• With the coming of the summer season, the faces of our dear emigrants have begun arriving in Lebanon from the farthest corners of the inhabited world, and Lebanon receives them with open arms ... and an open heart, its eye wet with tears of joy!!!

Among the honored arrivals are figures of finance, industry, and commerce, and among them, too, the poet and the man of letters ... and toward this last company our eyes turn today — at their head the great poet of 'Abqar, Chafic Maalouf, and his lady wife.

It was a gracious gesture on the part of the generous poet Georges Saydah when he invited the writers of Lebanon and its leading figures to meet the poet Maalouf and to raise toasts to his health; it was a companionable gathering, on the evening of the tenth of June, in the course of which many made the acquaintance of many, and dear friends met in an atmosphere fragrant with cheer and merriment

— the first credit for spreading it belonging to the poet Saydah and his lady wife and his daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Ghosn, for they looked after the guests most handsomely and surrounded them with the fine hospitality and generosity for which they are known ...

And at this evening party we made the acquaintance of the poet of Lebanese origin and Brazilian upbringing, Jamil al-Mansour Haddad, and of his wife, the well-known Brazilian journalist and poetess Helena Silveira de Haddad, whom the readers of The Woman's Voice came to know through what the late lamented woman of letters Salma Sayegh translated of her work in 1950.

A hundred times "welcome" to the poet of 'Abqar and to his wife, and to his companions the poets and men of letters; and let the readers await a delightful reportage about them in the coming issue!

The Ceremony of the YWCA Vocational Institute

• The Vocational Institute attached to the Young Women's Christian Association held a ceremony (on the eighth of June) in the hall of the Ahliah College for Girls, during which diplomas were distributed to nearly fifty graduates in various vocations — drawing, handicrafts, and commerce among them.

Speeches were given at the ceremony by Mr. Hanna Ghalib and Miss Irene Tecarden; Miss Edma Bayoud, directress of the Association, also delivered an address on behalf of the director of the Ministry of Social Affairs.

After the ceremony there was an exhibition of the various works, which, if they prove anything, prove the wakeful vigilance devoted to nourishing this institute, unique in the variety of its specialties and the novelty of its subjects.
