Said Akl Betrothed to Souad Abi Saleh

The newspapers published the news of Said Akl's engagement to Miss Souad Abi Saleh, and the news was met with astonishment and with joy: —

With astonishment, because the poet had gone back on his many declarations that he was no seeker of marriage.

And with joy, because the admirers of his poetry hoped that his engagement would be the opening of an era glittering with freshness and newness!!

We went to draw the news from its source, and learned that the engagement in fact took place only on the fourth of last July — the anniversary of the poet's birth —

They were alone, climbing the highest peak in Lebanon, and he set upon her the engagement ring, and she set upon him his ring..! Do you suppose the thinker-poet cast thought aside when he chose the summit, the moment, and the "how"?? We think nothing else!

And who might this sweet Souad Abi Saleh be? She is of the age of a rose, one of the fair blondes, "and in her beautiful head is a thinking mind," says Said Akl — a graduate of the Teachers' College and a student at the French School of Higher Letters; she attended his lectures faithfully, and she alone, of the fair sex, inspired him to marriage!

.... And from her inspiration comes his: there will spring from his tongue the poetry of love and happiness — and we are waiting for this new harvest!! Waiting, too, for the completion of the rejoicings, when Beirut becomes the couple's home, to make it easier for the bride to finish her studies in literature.. As for Zahle's share of them — every summer season!
