In medicine, the use of radioactive materials multiplies day by day; and the credit belongs to the radioactive iodine that gave us back the voice of Umm Kulthum — indeed it is said that the cure of Umm Kulthum's throat had a far-reaching effect on the founding of the Egyptian center for radioactive elements.

Radiation has a frightening aspect if all the necessary precautions are not taken against exposure to too much of it, for sudden changes of

type (mutations) have appeared in plants and animals after they were exposed to radiation. It is known that the level of radiation in the earth has risen in recent years owing to the many nuclear explo-sions, but so far it constitutes no danger to the human race. Nevertheless, it is incumbent upon us to forestall the danger before it occurs, and for this reason scientists in all parts of the world are giving their utmost attention to the study of these effects.

With the revival and progress of industry in Lebanon, and with the rise in the standard of living, the need for nuclear power grows until it becomes a need that cannot be dispensed with. This may be among the most important of the reasons for our asking the government in Lebanon to proceed with the building of a nuclear reactor, that we may profit from the many opportunities it opens before our country in the fields of advancement...
