A Charity Market at Beirut College for Women

A Charity Market at Beirut College for Women

Even nature helped the students of Beirut College to hold this year's charity market... The night before had been rainy and stormy, and the girls could not believe that the sun would shine and the weather turn

from the wrath of thunderbolts and rains to serenity and radiance.

The market was a success thanks to the effort put forth by every one of the students. Before this dish stood a bouquet of young

girls, answering the requests of the guests and offering the varieties of Eastern foods, foremost among them tabbouleh and kibbeh, while the voice of another classmate rose: "Hot kaak!"... In another corner

a group devoted itself to selling Eastern curios and handwork. As for the theater hall, it was packed with seekers of amusement, for the students presented a delightful program in which folk dancing mingled with ballet, and Western singing with the airs of "Abu al-Zuluf" and "Ya Ghzayyil," and some of the students put on a comic play under the title "When the Fair Sex Rules"... Musical airs reigned over the atmosphere, dispelling autumn's frown and the gloom of spirits... Here a cluster gathered around the star-reading fortune-teller, while another group preferred to amuse themselves with assorted games, on the pattern of the "fishing" game and "Where Is Your Lost Half?", and a troupe of the girls seized the opportunity, put on comical dress, and went about among the crowds, singing folk pieces or spreading publicity.

Worthier of mention than all this is the charitable aim of the project. Every year the

students hold this market so as to secure a sum of money
