Exchanging good wishes and drinking toasts

name, distorting it over the days until it became "Niklaus," and the Spaniards added the word "Santa" in place of "Sint," meaning the saint... Yet the "Santa Claus" of this age, with his red suit and his white beard, bears no kinship to Saint Nicholas, who was a pastor in one of the parishes of Holland.

Who Sang the First Christmas Carol?

The Church owes to Saint Francis of Assisi the writing of the simple carols, suited to the understanding of the common people. These carols reached England by way of the acting troupes, and were sung between the acts of the religious plays; they pleased the people, who grew attached to them. Once the worshippers' fervor rose so high that they went out into the public street singing these carols over and over.

The First to Think of Greeting Cards

The credit for that belongs also to certain English schoolboys...

For shortly before Christmas they would write to their parents, adorning the letters with drawings of their own making to show off their skill. This inventive method pleased Mr. Henry Cole, who sent to an artist asking him to draw cards for him to send to his friends; and the first card came onto the market in 1858.

Love
Do you realize?
A meaning perfumed by longing,
that moans in my depths and clamors in its moaning,
that rages feverish and storms within the ribs
and wafts abroad!..
Something dearer than bliss,
more beloved than the fragrance of hope,
in that faithful heart —
No! I once had a faithful heart!
Do you realize —
this is the buried love,
poured out from the heart of God
as a joyous melody,
to usher in the breaths of life
as fragrance and sweet perfume,
and to shade the far corners of hearts
with a tune — you would equal its ring,
if only you would listen!
It is a breath that was — and so perfume came, fluttering of wing,
... and I took from your eyes a mirror in which I see —
I see my buried love.
And when parting tyrannizes over me one day and sets my wounds aflame,
I drown, my brow afire,
for across the virgin timelessness I await certainty —
and behold, it was you
— O radiant splendor! —
who looked out from the eyelid of certainty!
And I took from your eyes a mirror in which I see my buried love!
