Centers for Men and Others for Women

Centers for men and others for women: Alongside the spread of instruction, every men's center has tools for carpentry or for leatherwork, shoemaking, and tailoring; and as the project advanced, it developed in some centers into the making of finely wrought wooden furniture. At the exhibition we saw furniture made by the refugees that is no less well made than what the best factories turn out.

As for the women's centers, the vocational instruction there is given a feminine cast: the women learn, alongside reading and writing, sewing, embroidery, and some decorative work. The women's attendance at the Basic Education centers in the camps and in the cities is great; I have seen with my own eyes, in these centers, adolescent girls sitting with women advanced in years, receiving one and the same lesson!

A reading room, and programs of recreation: Alongside this vocational activity there is in every center a place for reading, supplied with magazines, newspapers, and books for whoever wishes to read, and games for whoever wishes to amuse himself. The centers prepare cultural and social programs aimed at urging cleanliness and raising the standard of living, besides the performing of plays, the holding of parties, and the like.

The result of two years: Basic Education now has 39 centers in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and the Gaza Strip... These centers are attended by 44,000 persons, men and women; of these, five thousand attend regularly in the classes of the fight against illiteracy, and five thousand in the vocational training centers, while the rest benefit from the fields of athletic activity, games, and so on —

It remains for me to affirm that all these measures are temporary; perhaps the refugee question will be solved once and for all and they will return to their country — and may that awaited day not be long in coming...
