• The Society for Combating Prostitution in Lebanon continues its activity by every means toward the attainment of its goal. Among the results of its efforts — its addressing of memoranda to the Prime Minister's office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Municipality of Beirut, and its dispatch of delegations to the competent departments — is that it found in the Municipal Council attentive ears for its appeals, the more so since the ladies who are members of the Council are among the first to work in this field for the safety of society and the dignity of woman.

No sooner had the Council referred the memorandum submitted to it by the society to the health committee, which counts among its members the ladies referred to, than the committee hastened to hold a special session on March 14, 1956, to which it invited the Society for Combating Prostitution; the society delegated to attend the session its president, Mr. Mohammad Jamil Beyhum, Mrs. Adelaide Rishani, and the

two doctors Muhammad Haydar and Zakan Shakhashiri.

The session was presided over by Mrs. Laure Tabet and attended, of the members of the municipality, by the two ladies Ibtihaj Kaddoura and Ellen Rihan and by Messrs. Fawzi al-Itani, Dr. Michel Duaybis, Agop Atchejian, and Maroun Awwad, in the hall of the Municipal Council.

It was observed that the aims of all agree and meet at the point that licensed prostitution must be abolished and clandestine prostitution combated. It was therefore resolved that the committee urge the Municipal Council most pressingly to adopt this matter. And pending the enactment of new legislation abolishing official prostitution utterly, it was resolved to demand of the government the following:

1 - The removal of the brothels from their present place to outside Beirut. 2 - Sterner combating of clandestine prostitution. 3 - The cessation of the granting of new licenses for houses of prostitution. 4 - The cessation of the granting of new licenses to wayward

women applying for registration in the houses of prostitution. The Council further conferred with the members of the Society for Combating Prostitution on certain other means conducive to the goal, and it was resolved to form a committee of Messrs. Mohammad Jamil Beyhum and Fawzi al-Itani to study them and to present a report on them at a second session.

The Woman's Voice supports this blessed movement and wishes it success.

• Mrs. Suad Mawhij Saqr, agent of "The Woman's Voice" in Argentina, is one of those most zealous for the magazine; for a time, before her departure from Lebanon, she nourished it with the pen of a born woman of letters...

Word has reached us that Mrs. Saqr was blessed, at the opening of the new year, with a baby boy, "Miguel Angel" — to her and to her generous husband our sincerest congratulations and good wishes.
