Elegance in Your Hat

الاناقة في قبعتك

To be elegant, and for your femininity to be complete, you must, Madam, wear a hat. And what is new in hat fashions is not without its whimsy: the hat designers say that the very latest trend is the fine hat, wide and beautiful...

You hear your friends' comments on the hat: Oh, what a hat... it is magnificent!... while the men accost you: Good gracious... what is that you have put on your head?... So to whom will you listen?...

Hats today are unlike hats in any other period of time, and they occupy an important corner of woman's world...

Next summer people will speak not so much of the beauty of hats as of their size and the breadth of their circle; a hat is expected, moreover, to catch the eye to the point of bewilderment, and to lend a special cast to a woman's personality!... So there is no escape for a woman, matters standing thus, from wearing a hat — if not a wide one, then a tall one, or a deep one! And this depth in the modern hat is not to be liked; one lady expressed it by saying: You would think the hat was wearing you, and not you it!... A woman must therefore reflect, and accustom herself, before she ventures into this hard pass!

For generations past woman did not adopt hats of this size, but today they have become the distinguishing mark of the empire of women!... And the first thing the modern woman must remember is that there is no escape for her from covering her head!... The modern hat sweeps over part of the forehead, clothing most of it however broad it may be — and this calls for the utmost care in dressing the hair and beautifying the face, for the hat draws the eye all the more to the good points of the face; here the fine nose steps forward to take its place, and the "Greta Garbo" style is complete...

If, however, the nose is broad, that raises an obstacle, and the lady goes back to another sort of hat — the "turban," which she winds about her head!... The first style is the good fortune of the owner of beautiful eyes: when the brim of the hat bends down to cover the eyes, the longing grows to see what lies beneath the cover... And if the wheel of fortune has passed you by, you can beautify your eyes with kohl, and then let down over them a transparent veil, hanging from the brim of the hat, and you become a sweet and mysterious part of this costume!

And to add to the elegance of your appearance, leave your shoulders bare; and you may dispense with necklaces and earrings if your neck is short. There remain your walk and your movements... which must, at the very least, be in harmony with the elegant costume!
