We Shall Return... — A Shepherdess's Dream —
Salwa Adnan
In the bend of the valley dwells a shepherdess
There... across the paths
She shelters in the shadow of the moon
And loves the hour before dawn
And spreads her hopes upon the roses —
Hopes of promises... whose sweetness will bestow,
In my name, what was... and what shall be.
•
The time of humiliation shall not last long
«And you wander among the rocks»
Our land shall return... in safety
We shall not pass our lives in this wrong
We shall live and we shall struggle...
We were created for struggle
Here is our nation, vying in the strife...
Its one care, that we regain what we have lost...
•
Ah... how sweet those dwelling-places
Love has pitched its tent over them
They are fragrance and life
They are hope for the heart...
And there, in the climbing hills,
Crouches my house...
Amid verdant thickets...
And the treasures of the earth are in them —
How far from them the barrenness of this valley! —
Birds filling the earth... my song,
Sweet of rhythm, in the land of my country...
•
We shall return...
Our hearts kindle a fire...
And we shall restore
The glory of a land now set...
The owl has croaked over it...
And it wailed in grief.
Our tomorrow...
This tomorrow... is our aspiration
It defies fate...
It does not fear danger
Its young men were created of struggle...
The dew is in their blood
They do not fear death
Their aims... crane upward toward the heights
O friend, what is this creed
That has crystallized the most wretched of minds
In my country!
•
To your sanctuary, beloved «Palestine»,
We shall come back...
We shall blunt the tyranny of a people
And we shall thunder...
We shall tear down... and shatter
Every small-souled being...
To your sanctuary, O rich house,
We shall return
We shall grind humiliation... and wipe out sorrow
And we shall give freely
Of our blood... that we may bring back...
Our sweetest days
In your dwellings... O my country
