Society News: The American University Honors the Arab Delegations

On the afternoon of the fourteenth of last August, the American University of Beirut gave a reception at the Alumni Club in honor of the Arab delegations to a study session held by the University's Education Department on "Education at the Secondary Stage."

The gathering included a number of official personalities, leading Arab men of education, and a select company of those working in this field.

Mustafa Hamed Ammar

With the new moon of last August, our friend Mrs. Layla Lababidi,

wife of Dr. Hamed Ammar, gave birth to her firstborn, and he was named "Mustafa" after his paternal grandfather.

The delivery took place at the hands of Dr. Saadeh at the hospital of Dr. Habib Khoury... and Layla has gone up to the mountains with Mustafa, both in the very best of health.

Joy spread through everyone, above all the house of Layla's father, Mr. Salah Lababidi, where cups of the "traditional" mughli

went round in celebration of little "Mustafa," the first of the grandchildren, whose coming they hope will be an opening of blessing and good fortune.

To the parents, Layla and Hamed, and to all the family, "The Woman's Voice" offers its congratulations on sweet Mustafa.

Intisar Tabash Abu Khadra

She is a friend and a colleague whose pen has so often nourished the pages of this magazine and of others. We knew her, after her graduation from Beirut College for Women, as a mainspring of movement and activity — until she was appointed to a post in Dhahran... There she met her other half, Mr. Kanaan Abu Khadra, public relations adviser at the oil company, and destiny was fulfilled. Everything was concluded last year, without any fanfare, and yesterday Intisar came to spend the summer with a baby girl in her arms — a daughter of three months — named "Hana," with the features of her petite, fair-haired mother!

Intisar and her husband Mr. Kanaan paid a visit of acquaintance and affection to the office of "The Woman's Voice," and on the faces of the young couple showed the signs of happiness and mutual love — our congratulations and best wishes to dear Intisar, who has chosen well... even in Dhahran!

The Iraqi Lawyer Sabiha al-Sheikh Daoud

"The Woman's Voice" has been late in discovering that Miss Sabiha al-Sheikh Daoud is summering among us in the mountains! But it will not let the opportunity pass, even if it comes late, to show its good wishes and the sincerity of its affection for the gracious Iraqi guest — the more so as our readers have already, more than

once, become acquainted with this brilliant womanly figure.

Miss Sabiha al-Sheikh Daoud's pride does not rest solely on her being the first Iraqi woman to obtain the Iraqi law degree, nor on her having taken firm progressive steps ever since gaining those credentials, working in the teaching and inspection service with great success; the whole pride lies in her having joined the corps of the Iraqi judiciary, becoming the first lady to win this high trust from her government — a thing we are still demanding in Lebanon, where we do not yet have a woman judge to hear the cases of juveniles and of women..

Miss Sabiha has, over and above all this, a wide activity in the Iraqi women's associations.. And she loves Lebanon, and lets not a single summer pass without visiting its hills for a month or two, for rest and for the renewal of friendships.

A thousand welcomes to our friend Sabiha, with generous and fragrant good wishes.
