The Zahle Child Nursery Party

The Child Nursery Society, through the energy of its president, Mrs. Emily Nasrallah, has shown great activity during the past month. It held a grand ball, under the patronage of the Lebanese press, for which it prepared every element of merriment and diversion, so that it became the ornament of the season's parties. At the head of the table of honor sat the leading journalists, who played the part of the jury for the election of the queen of beauty queens from among a bevy of lovely young ladies who entered the contest. Miss Hind al-Sakkaf

won the title, and won as well a thousand lira, two round-trip tickets to Europe... and a number of ladies' articles and luxuries. Amal Salam and Ramona Awad were elected maids of honor to Her Majesty the Queen. During the evening there was also a sale by auction; one of the precious pieces put up at auction was from the

workshop of Mrs. Aida Labaki, and it set a record. Donations, too, reached their peak: Sheikh Abdullah al-Sabah donated ten thousand lira, and some Saudi emirs donated five thousand lira...

The second party, which the society held in honor of Sheikh Abdullah al-Jaber and his wife the Emira Layla, was among the finest of parties; several official personalities attended it, and His Grace Bishop Saba delivered an eloquent address. The gracious speech of the society's president came as the close of that party — in it she expressed the society's thanks to those beneficent hands that do not forget, in the fullness of their happiness, the orphans and the deprived.

The Ball of the Women Helpers of the American Hospital

The Society of Women Helpers of the American Hospital has chosen October 27 as the date of the grand ball which it is accustomed to hold every year, setting aside its proceeds to help needy patients.

This year's ball will be at the Capitol Hotel, and social circles hope it will be the party of the season, in view of the fine elements taking an earnest part in producing it.

It is worth mentioning that this energetic women's society has labored for nine years — through the sale of flowers in the little shop to the left as one enters the hospital, and through the 'café' that welcomes visitors from the hospital and from outside it, in addition to the proceeds of the grand annual ball — labored to help our patients in straitened circumstances and to secure the fees of their surgical operations. The 'used-clothing store,' situated next to the 'University Cooperative,' which yields a net profit averaging 500 lira a month, is spent for the sake of the children's ward at the hospital.

The responsibility, as is plain, is a large one, and requires a tremendous effort, all the details of which are undertaken by volunteer ladies who have divided the tasks and seen to carrying them out, out of their faith in the nobility of

the work and the humanity of its aim, far and near.
