The Role of Woman and the Army in Lebanon

honorable role that woman played during Lebanon's fight in 1943 under the banner of the struggle — how she would mount demonstrations, combat intrigues, and kindle enthusiasm in the men.

Even so... I am not among those who favor woman's entry into Parliament when she has fallen short in the duty of civil defense, as we have seen above...

The "jokes" about woman's participation in politics have been many, but I shall put it briefly: the Lebanese woman lacks neither maturity nor consciousness; her capacity, rather, depends on the measure of her confidence in herself. And I believe there exists no general rule that applies to all women — just as is the case

with men... How many a man — especially in these days of ours — it would have been better had he kept to his house... and how many a woman, it would have been a piece of good fortune had she taken the place of certain men?!

— Do you believe that the state of emergency has spared Lebanon grave events? And what is the measure of the army's contribution in this respect?

— The army has a prestige inspired by pure military conduct, not by intimidation. And in my belief Lebanon has escaped the great danger of sectarianism — that misshapen creature whose evils and woes are without number — and that only thanks to the

army, which inspires respect in the Lebanese citizens.

The Lebanese army has earned this respect for many reasons, the chief of which is that politics, which explains everything, found no way into it — God be praised...

Yet I cannot but pay tribute also to the consciousness of the Lebanese people, its culture, and its national upbringing, which greatly helped to spare the country problems we can well do without.

I have believed, and still believe, in the Lebanese people — this people that stood as one man in 1943 and drove out the foreigner, and that has repeated the feat today, standing as an impregnable dam against the stirrers of sedition and intrigue.

Inspired by the Family
The family!! — a longing, noble in life, and a social sense, sublime,
in which responsibility is a matter that blends with nature,
and lays a stone in the building of the useful society —
It is a bold venturing forth, looking out upon the life of the individual
with the warm visions — of the family —
— gazing upon it.
And longing merits it, that there may remain, in the long reach of its roots,
out of his senses and his thoughts, a living image, stamped from
his spirit, abiding in the folds of the years, a trace outlasting the thing itself.
And it opens out upon a firmness of bond and a fastness of
endurance that fulfills its range, by what it has been given of capability in the self,
of nobility in the soul, and of striving in the battleground of life.
So from the dream that wraps thought in fruitfulness and safety,
and from the soul flooded with tranquility in a bountiful
conscience,
and from the felicity that life achieves amid its clamor —
... to this image,
gleaming... on the brow of time, encircled by a frame of
radiance that springs up in the conscience of man
— by inspiration —
