Many are the women and men who love Emily Abi Rashed 'from afar off' — who love her tender, purposeful writings and her elegant poetic style, in 'The Woman's Voice' and in 'al-Sayyad' and elsewhere.
And the small circle close to Emily loves in her her idealism, her lofty character, and her quiet, living sincerity. To all of these we are happy to bring the glad news of her engagement to Dr. Philip George Nasrallah, holder of a doctorate in chemistry from the universities of America and chemical consultant to Imperial Chemical Industries (I. C. I.) in Beirut.
We have an appointment with our readers next July, to present Emily as 'Bride of the Month.' We understand that the honeymoon will carry her, with Philip, on a journey to Europe. As for her program for the coming year, its final lines have not been drawn — but it is certain that she will finish her last year of study at the American University, and that she will not leave 'The Woman's Voice'... and perhaps she will go on writing in 'al-Sayyad.'
Welcome to the happy smile returning to Emily's lips, after a long absence... and our warmest congratulations and good wishes to the two young betrothed.
The hall of al-Nadwa was crowded on the evening of February 14 last to hear the lecture of Mrs. Maguy Achkar al-Haj on 'Woman and Politics.' The occasion was marked by the absence of the women leaders from the lecture...
The lecturer treated her subject in a serious and sober manner, reviewing woman's participation in politics down through history. This participation, she said, had generally come by way of man; she therefore asked that the two — man and woman — cooperate, proceeding from the recognition of her as a human being, so as to profit from her political capacity.
She turned at the last to the electoral side, inasmuch as political activity manifests itself — most of all — through representation in the assemblies of the nation.
