The World of Cinema

The Ten Favorite Films of 1956

— Gregory Peck and John Huston attempted the impossible in producing this film, Moby Dick, although its subject is not new, for certain producers have taken it up before, depicting in it the struggle between man and the monsters of the sea. In this new production, however, the events revolve around the eternal struggle between man and fate, and also the struggle between man and himself.

— Bhowani Junction: A ruddy-skinned Indian girl whose heart is pulled between three men — so Ava Gardner appears amid the captivating Pakistani scenery, with Stewart Granger as a rough but attractive young man.

— War & Peace: The subject of this film is taken from "War and Peace" by Dostoevsky. It is in itself a long, many-branched story, and the directors suffered certain difficulties in adapting it and producing it in the form in which it appeared on the screen. As for Audrey Hepburn, who plays the lead in this film alongside Mel Ferrer and Henry Fonda, she has become Natasha herself in figure and temperament. It is one of the most successful films in its photography of scenes of war.

— Bus Stop: Don Murray [...] a herdsman, one of the cowboys [...] a comic film that shows the ability of [...] the comic as well!

— The Giant: The story [...] the Benedict family, as [...] Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor [...] the value of this production rests on the skill [...] also, on the appeal for tolerance [...]

— The August Moon [...] East and West. In it appears [...] having strayed a little from his calm [...] with comic situations.

— High Society: A merry film in which Grace Kelly appears for the last time on the screen. She appears in the role of a girl belonging to this high society, perplexed over the choice of her husband. As for Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, they are the elements of song and merriment in a merry film.

— The Ten Commandments: The subject of this world-famous production revolves around Charlton Heston in the role of Moses, lending the atmosphere the splendor and majesty of the occasion. The departure of the Israelites from the land of Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, the handing down of the Ten Commandments, and more, all appear in the film in awesome scenes. Playing roles alongside the hero are Yvonne De Carlo and Yul Brynner.

— Lust for Life: The story of the life of the artist Van Gogh. The artist is played by Kirk Douglas, who bears a very close resemblance to the famous painter. The actor has rendered the artist's anxious states of mind admirably.

— The King & I: Yul Brynner is the King, and "Deborah Kerr" is the governess of his children, who undertakes to refine the King as well and guide him in certain important matters. Added to this is a colored display of extraordinary costumes.
