the great hall of Lammermoor Castle (the castle of the Ashton family) the wedding guests sing the bridal chorus. Lord Arturo enters in his white attire and greets Enrico with a formal salute, and behind him comes the bride Lucia attended by her maids of honor — pale of face, her gaze wandering, weeping... Lord Enrico tries to reassure the bridegroom by saying that Lucia is still affected by her mother's death, whereas the true cause of her sorrow is her belief that her beloved has betrayed the pledge between them.
At her brother's insistence she finally signs the marriage register against her will. And as she does so, a commotion is heard at the far end of the hall... and behold, Edgardo Ravenswood, returned from France, enters the place accompanied by a few retainers. With one swift glance the situation becomes plain to him, and he believes that Lucia consented to the marriage of her own free will and pleasure. Here begins the most magnificent sung scene of this opera, as Edgardo, Enrico, the bridegroom Arturo, Raimondo, Alisa, and Lucia herself each join in a song into which each pours his own feelings: despite his bitter disappointment and his enmity toward the house of Lammermoor, Edgardo finds that he still loves Lucia... As for Lucia, she is seized with astonishment and her soul is filled with despair... Enrico is moved by this tragedy he has brought upon his sister... and the rest express their sympathy for Lucia...
Enrico orders Edgardo to leave the castle... Each of them draws his sword, and blood would almost have flashed but for Raimondo's intervention. Edgardo turns to Lucia and asks her whether she has signed the marriage document; she answers that she has; he flares with anger, returns
her ring to her, and demands that she give him back his own.
With an unconscious motion Lucia pulls the ring from her finger and falls in a faint. Edgardo withdraws from Lammermoor
Castle under the threats of those present...
