The "Child and Mother Care" Party

The charity dinner party to which the Child and Mother Care Society issued invitations on the evening of May 15 last, at the Bristol Hotel, attended by many Lebanese personalities and members of the diplomatic and press corps, was among the most successful parties of the season, thanks to its fine organization and its pleasant program. No sooner had Mrs. Chamoun arrived, accompanied by the honorary president of the society, Mrs. Shafiqa Diab — whose name has shone in every charitable project — than the orchestra played the national anthem, and immediately afterward the party was opened by the secretary of the society, Miss Wijdan Qadi, with a speech in which she welcomed those present and then gave a summary of the society's activity. After the guests had partaken of the delicious dinner to the strains of light music, Mr. Hankash delivered some of his droll jokes, which set the company ringing with warm applause. Before the raffle was drawn for the sixteen valuable prizes, Mrs. Chamoun presented to the society, represented in the person of its energetic

president, Mrs. Ni'mat Qaranful, the Order of the Cedar in the rank of Knight, in appreciation of her services in the fields of health and humanity — whereupon donations poured in so abundantly that they reached nine thousand Lebanese lira.

We congratulate Mrs. Qaranful on the decoration, which she deserves most fully; and we congratulate "Child Care" on this success, achieved thanks to the zeal and activity of the ladies responsible in the society; and we wish this humanitarian institution continued progress, and the extension of its valuable health and humanitarian services to every deprived child and mother...

The Ras Beirut Institute of Music and Drawing in the Service of the Blind, the Deaf, and the Mute

The Ras Beirut Institute of Music and Drawing issued invitations, on May 9 and 10 last, to a program of musical and theatrical varieties held in Irwin Hall at Beirut College for Women..

The hall was not crowded with attendance; even so, the party was honored, in all modesty, by Mrs. Zalfa Chamoun — for the proceeds were for the benefit of the blind, and the First Lady of Lebanon is known for her special tenderness toward these creatures deprived of the light of the eyes; she has spread her arms open before them in compassion and encouragement.

It was plain to those who attended the party what great effort had been exerted by those in charge of it, foremost among them the head of the institute, Mr. Sami Salibi, and the head of the government institute for the blind, Miss Widad Baroudi.

It is worth mentioning that Miss Baroudi has a special humane inclination toward teaching and helping the "handicapped" — the blind, the mute, and the deaf. She specialized in America in the teaching of this unfortunate class, and her teacher, Mr. Salibi, wished to help her clear her rugged path, so he offered her a place in his institute, into which
