My son — I would be leaving him... who would be tender to him after me?... And so I laid my plan to deceive you and leave him with
you. Have I succeeded?... And will you forgive — and take him?
Susie was wiping away her tears... Then she lifted the little one and brought him close to his mother, that she might kiss him; and she bent down in her turn and kissed the woman's forehead... the mother's... And without uttering a word she took up the little one,
pressed him to her heart, and kissed him then and there.
And the mother's tears ran down, and she motioned to Susie to go with the little one... A few minutes later the child was playing in the garden... and Susie was on her knees, praying for his valiant mother.
