of medical factors. Anemia arising from malnutrition, for example, is caused by an unusual destruction of the blood, or by a failure in the formation of blood, or by poor utilization of foodstuffs. It may also be caused by the diet's lack of one of the B vitamins, or of vitamin A, or of ascorbic acid. It is sometimes caused by a deficiency of copper. Thus we realize that anemia has many causes, and it is therefore important first to discover the true cause before beginning treatment.
It is agreed that there are three kinds of anemia:
1 — Hemorrhagic anemia, whose cause is the loss of blood as the result of accidents, and sometimes its obscure loss from the walls of the digestive canal.
2 — Anemia arising from a deficiency of iron — women are more exposed to this kind than men, because of the monthly period.
3 — Pernicious anemia. Recent discoveries have shown that there is a close relation between this kind and a deficiency of vitamin B12. Pernicious anemia is traced, however, to a deficiency in the secretions of the stomach, such that the stomach is unable to secrete enough hydrochloric acid and digestive ferments. In this
kind the deficiency is in the red corpuscles, not in the hemoglobin.
It has been proved that taking inorganic salts (inorganic Salts) and sufficient quantities of vita
min B12 cures the sufferer from pernicious anemia. And it may be said in general that anemia is more common among children than among adults.
