The New Lines of Fall Fashion 1957

There is no revolutionary upheaval in this fall's fashions; the fashion designers' single concern centers on adding to woman's elegance. In general one notes the spread of the loose, easy line, in coats as well as in dresses. The changes that have come over fall fashions are confined to six points:

1 — The skirt tends to be short — rising 40 to 45 cm from the ground.

2 — The importance of the collar, with the use of bows, flowers, etc.

3 — A drop in the waistline, so that the belt often wraps around the hips.

4 — Dresses that cling to the body.

5 — The roundness of the hips... the dress wrapping around them.

6 — Wide, loose coats.

These six points result in a free, comfortable style for the lady. Christian Dior has laid stress on the roundness of the hips, so that the dress wraps easily around them; he also makes much use of sashes tied in large or small knots, or draped — and hardly any dress, however simple, is without a knot at the collar or on the belt.

In suits, the long jacket in the "Canadian" style with its wide belt prevails; the colors, too, are mostly bright, lending the lady a spirit of gaiety and cheer — such as red and blue — while for coats and suits gray abounds.
