Dr. Jamal Karam Harfush has returned from a journey to Europe whose purpose was to take part in the work of the executive committee of the International Union for Child Welfare, she having been elected to membership of the committee in 1954 and re-elected in 1956.
The executive committee held its annual meeting in Geneva, where the Union's head office and secretariat are located. The meeting began on September 21 and ended on the 29th, and the subjects under discussion were: the plan of work, the budget for 1958, and the drawing of the basic lines of the international congress that will be held in Brussels (Belgium) in the summer of 1958.
Dr. Jamal's connection with the International Union for Child Welfare arose from her being president of the Lebanese Union for Child Welfare. This union at present comprises thirty societies from among the Lebanese associations concerned with child welfare, and it is a member of the International Union. Among its most important works are the creation of a bond among the member societies, strengthening them, and endeavoring to develop their programs of work; it also provides a large number of needy Lebanese children with annual financial assistance to cover their school expenses and their needs in clothing and medical care. This year it is working to improve the condition of childhood in the Lebanese countryside, and it hopes to carry out the plan it has drawn for this purpose in cooperation with the International Union and the American Save the Children Federation. The union has a secretary specializing in social affairs, Dr. André Karam, who recently received the degree of doctor from New York University in social affairs, and he will see to the carrying out
of the union's program in the Lebanese countryside.
Dr. Jamal has now returned to resume her activity in her private clinic, and as a professor in the faculty of medicine at the American University of Beirut — besides her various social activities.
Beginning October 28 last, the "International Red Cross Conference" was held in New Delhi, bringing together the
member states from all parts of the world. Lebanon was represented at this important conference by Mrs. Laure Georges Tabet, Mrs. Najla Salim Saab, Mrs. Ellen Habib Rihan, and Mrs. Heneni Tarcha.
The departure of Mesdames Tarcha, Rihan, and Saab fell by plane on the evening of October 27, Mrs. Tabet having preceded them to attend the preparatory session.
The Woman's Voice wishes the ladies of Lebanon success in their mission and a happy return to their social responsibilities.
