Talk of the Heart – Farewell

Aphrodite

حديث القلب - وداع · أفروديت

Why is the sunset so mournful of face, so ashen,
brooding in crimson tears?
Are they tears of anguish
shed by his companion the sea
upon the thresholds of the twilight,
an offering to the eye of his departing beloved?

XXXX

And the faithful echo carried back to the sun
the sighs of the lovesick sea and the burning of his confidences:
"What woman will keep me company after you,
swaying in my embrace, full of longing, as she:
wraps me in her golden hair
and folds me in two arms
fresher than morning and more tender?
Who after you will lull my roaring passion
and perfume it with incense and fire?
Who will scatter upon the lips of the waves
the spray of love made lawful
and the rippling, radiant laugh?
Who will lie with me, my beloved, as you have lain with me—
a languor stealing me away from the wine of your breath,
while red desire boils over,
carousing in my veins?"

XXXX

And the sun drifted away in humiliation
...and the page of her crimsoned cheek sank
into a swamp of blood...
And darkness crept over the universe
and shrouded it in its black veil
And the sea forgot, and slept,
his sighs died away,
and with his tide his confidences were lost!
