Nahia Ghalmieh Eddé

It was a pleasant surprise the moment we received a card from São Paulo, Brazil, signed "Nahia Ghalmieh Eddé."

Solving the riddle was no easy matter; at last it became clear to us that Nahia had been wed, in an impromptu, "modern" fashion, at the beginning of last summer, to the young man Nakhle Eddé, and that after the wedding the two flew to Europe and from there to Brazil, on a honeymoon that has lasted to this day. Mrs. Nahia has in São Paulo an emigrant sister, with whom she has made her stopping place, and she has traveled all over Brazil, becoming acquainted with kinsfolk and compatriots and accepting their generous invitations.

During her stay in São Paulo she was invited to speak at the Lebanese club, and she spoke of the renaissance of the Lebanese woman in the recent period, singling out for mention the magazine "The Woman's Voice" and the great educational role it plays in our present age.

The Woman's Voice congratulates our friend Nahia, even if belatedly, and wishes her and her groom a life clothed in glory and happiness.

The Nicolas–Janet Liyan Wedding

There is nothing like weddings for the surging up of the spirit of youth and love. At weddings, eyes wander over faces brimming with happiness and good cheer, hearts quiver with gladness and delight, and autumn becomes like a spring of everlasting freshness...

...On the tenth of last November, the young Nicolas Najib Liyan stood with his sweet bride, Janet George Saba, in the Greek Catholic Cathedral of Mar Elias, receiving, amid a flood of joy, the blessing of Their Graces Bishops Ni'ma and Yuwakim, attended by a choir of chanting priests in a reverent atmosphere of supplications and candles...

The cathedral was packed with hundreds of guests, official and civilian personalities, and the splendor of the wedding showed in the sumptuous decorations and the baskets of lilies and roses, placed with great taste along both sides of the aisles and in every corner...

The lovely bride, with her radiant smile and her slender figure, seemed the most beautiful of the lilies — in her original satin gown, the work of the Italian dressmaker "Ricca." After receiving the con

gratulations, the young bride and groom slipped away... perhaps to a delightful, blissful seclusion in the shade of the holy Cedars of the Lord...

The good wishes of "The Woman's Voice" to the newlyweds, Nicolas and Janet, and our special congratulations to the members of their two families — above all the groom's father, Mr. Najib Liyan, chief of the bureau of the Ministry of Information.

The People's China Troupe at UNESCO

On November 9, 1957, the acrobatic troupe of People's China opened the artistic season on the stage of the UNESCO Palace in Beirut. The seats were crowded with spectators — official personalities, notables, journalists, and young people. The troupe excelled in its numbers, and especially in the scene "The Flower of the Isle of Rhodes."

In this thirsting rush toward the arts, and amid the flood of applause and admiration, our faith grew stronger that we have won a victory, and won love, for our new theater as it grows.
