With the appearance of this issue, the book "My Memories with Gibran" will be in distribution among the writers... Readers will doubtless recall the series that Mrs. Edvick Shayboub was, until recently, writing in "The Woman's Voice" under the title "A Page from the Life of Gibran and Howayek in Paris" — the memories recounted to her by her friend, the great artist. It is worth mentioning that half of these memories have not yet been published. We shall not speak of the book's elegance and the beauty of its printing and production; it is enough that it is published by Dar al-Ahad.
Our friend Miss Samira Azzam has chosen to try her luck in a new activity: she has accepted an engagement ring presented to her by Mr. Adib Hassan, director of the "Ford" automobile company in Iraq. This took place in Baghdad, where Samira held a senior post last year at the Iraqi Broadcasting Station. She is now our guest, to complete the requirements of the marriage. Samira is too wise to entangle herself in a big wedding... naturally, there must be a brief wedding ceremony,
held at her home in Beirut, after which she will fly with her bridegroom to their new place of residence — Baghdad.
As we wish her every good and every happiness, we ask of Samira that her literary life after marriage remain as we have known it, fertile and giving, and that it not be stricken with barrenness, as is the case with most of the daughters of her sex; and we ask her also not to forget us in the flood of her new life, but to let her flights of fancy and her stories look in on us from time to time.
Christmas in Beirut has a splendor beyond compare. Parties are held in most of the schools, and the little ones are urged to do good works and give presents to other, poorer children. Musical and traditional celebrations are held as well, presided over by decorated and lighted trees.
• Among the most notable of these celebrations was the one to which Mr. Salvador Arnita, head of the music department at the American University of Beirut, issued invitations, on Sunday, December 15 last, in the Assembly Hall. There his mixed choir played and sang "Handel's Christmas Anthem," and those present joined in some of the Christmas carols, which made an impression at once solemn and joyous.
• The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), as is its custom, presented a number of Christmas parties organized by its schools and its bodies — such as the vocational school, the quilting workers, and the women employees — and crowned them on December 20 with the Christmas party for all its members, each member bringing with her a gift for a small child... The program included a talk by Dr. Anis Frayha on the subject: "Christmas Is Gladness and Joy," while Mr. Afif Boulos and his choir provided the music and the carols.
