Young Women of Merit for 1957

The American women's magazine "Mademoiselle" has made it its custom to choose, at the end of each year, nine women who have excelled in their fields of work or have distinguished themselves in the display of their talents. Its choice for the past year fell on nine women belonging to three countries. It is worth noting that this is the fourteenth year in which the magazine has carried on this competition, unique of its kind, which is considered, without doubt, a great spur to creation and diligence...

The ages of the winners of this honor for the past year range between 21 and 32; they represent art, education, sport, sculpture, social service, and fashion — for each of them gave of herself more than she was asked, adding to her own field the overflowing vitality of youth.

And we ask ourselves, as we review these winners and set out the merits that made them excel over others and carry off the honors of merit for 1957 — why should not the magazine "The Woman's Voice" begin this venture for the coming year, setting its sights from this moment on the women's activities now going on in Lebanon and in the Arab world, and appointing a committee of experts, men and women, to study the applications and decide the results in their light?? Why should our magazine not have honorary merit prizes for each year, announced at the opening of every new year?

What do our honored readers think? Are there any suggestions?

3 — Barbara Lekberg — a sculptress in steel. She exhibited 15 pieces at the Sculpture Center in New York; industrial companies made contracts with her, and she won prizes and grants.

2 — Shirley Fry — a tennis champion who spent twenty years of her life practicing this pastime until she became the first tennis player of the world for the past year.

1 — Julie Andrews — an English actress, 21 years old. Her talents drew attention in American artistic circles, especially after she played on the Broadway stage the heroine of Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion," and she shone on television in the company of Bing Crosby.
