The YWCA Opens Its Financial Campaign to Raise a Million Lira

On Wednesday evening, January 15, there opened the financial ... which the Young Women's Christian Association is organizing to collect one million lira, with which a huge building will be raised comprising the association's various sections. On page ... is a full reportage on this important building project, so we shall confine ourselves here to speaking of the dinner banquet with which the financial campaign was opened at the Bristol Hotel, under the patronage of the association's Lebanese honorary president, Mrs. Zalfa Chamoun.

Some three hundred persons attended the banquet, supporters of the Young Women's Christian Association, official and civilian.

The gathering was opened by the Reverend Anis al-Khoury with a word of prayer, and after him the association's president, Mrs. Janet Hitti, spoke a word explaining the aim of the campaign. Then the president of the campaign, Mrs. Eva Malik, rose to set forth with eloquence ... 'our responsibility' toward the campaign; and finally Mr. Fawzi Azar spoke on 'our contribution' to the campaign.

The party included an anthem by the choir of the office

employees' group, composed by Miss Marie Eid, who succeeded in it most splendidly, her poetic gift shining forth.

The party closed with a theatrical scene performed by representatives of the various groups, its subject: 'This Is the Young Women's Christian Association.' The students acted and sang well, and succeeded in kindling an atmosphere of enthusiasm in all those present — an enthusiasm that will seep from them into society, so that publicity for the project may spread on a wide scale and meet, God willing, with the hoped-for success.
