The Lebanese University Women
The enthusiasm of university women in Lebanon this year is greater than in years past. The month opened with a simple meeting called by the "Lebanese University Women" association in the hall of the Physicians' Syndicate, its first aim being to hear Miss Lisa Sergio — Italian by origin, who occupies an important position in American radio and journalism. Miss Sergio's talk centered on "The Role of the University Woman in This Age." She defined the university woman's position in the struggle now going on in the world between the two great camps, and drew her attention to the weight of the responsibility laid upon her shoulders, especially in this part of the world...
And on the twenty-seventh of last February this association celebrated the fifth anniversary of its founding, at a simple, family-style tea party at the Alumni Club — an occasion for gaiety and acquaintance, and for strengthening the ties between the older members and the new.
As for the date of the new elections, it was decided to postpone it another two months for a sound reason;
until then the president will remain Dr. Edma Abouchdid, who has done, and continues to do, a great deal toward gathering the university women into a single institution.
The University Women's Federation Soirée
It was a crowded evening at the Bristol Hotel on the night of the fifteenth of last February, organized by the University Women's Federation under the presidency of Dr. Zahia Kaddoura. It was attended by His Excellency Mr. Kazem al-Khalil, representing His Excellency the President of the Republic, and Mr. Adel Osseiran, Speaker of the Chamber
of Deputies, and His Excellency Mr. Farid Kozma, Minister of Information and Education, together with a great throng of official and civilian guests.
The members of the University Women's Federation succeeded in spreading an atmosphere of merriment and enthusiasm; the rounds of the lottery were conducted by the light-spirited national wit Mr. Najib Hankash, and valuable prizes were distributed to the winners.
And there was a pleasant surprise when the envoy of President Chamoun announced that the government had donated a thousand Lebanese lira to the University Women's Federation.
