Nahla Shuman in England

Nahla Shuman in England

During the past month our friend the farmer Nahla Marwa Shuman returned from a week's journey to England, where she met her husband, Mr. Hassan Shuman, who had spent three months in the United States inspecting the modern farms for raising poultry and acquainting himself with the new and successful experiments in everything connected with his work.

As for Mrs. Shuman, who bore alone the task of overseeing the running of the farm in her husband's absence, she was in the direst need of a holiday, however short, in which to slip free of the strain of the wearying routine. She enjoyed herself with Hassan for a full week in England and Europe, and the two returned together to where the work of the farm awaited them with a double shearing. Welcome home!

Activities of the Lebanese Women's League — Habiba Yakan in Accra

And Mrs. Habiba Chaaban Yakan, president of the Young Muslim Women's Association, flew off on the 23rd of last February, in her brother's company, on a trip to Accra (Africa) that will last about two months — for family reasons. Just before her departure she whispered into the ear of one of her friends that if she found the atmosphere favorable, she would turn her trip into a fund-raising tour for the completion of the vocational college that is still under construction...

As for the itinerary of the journey, it depends on circumstances, and it may pass through Europe as well, for a clever lady like

every pleasure and success on this congenial springtime journey.

More than a hundred Lebanese ladies gathered on the afternoon of the seventh of last February at the Cénacle Libanais, at the invitation of the Lebanese Women's League, to unify women's ranks and to analyze the important questions occupying their minds.

The meeting was presided over by Mrs. Afifi Majdalani on behalf of the president, Mrs. Heneni Tarcha, who was absent for compelling reasons. She welcomed those present and thanked them for answering the call of duty; then she presented Mrs. Edvick Shayboub to set forth the question of The Woman's Voice and the stages it has passed through since its founding, just after independence, in 1945. The editor-in-chief's remarks centered on an appeal to the women of Lebanon to reconsider the relationship existing between the only women's magazine and its women readers — between the League and its daughter, The Woman's Voice — and her words made a good impression.

Then Mrs. Adlette Rishani, president of the Prisons Committee, came forward with a detailed exposition of the state of the prisons in Lebanon and the health and moral dangers to which the prisoner is exposed. The subject was discussed by those present, and many sound proposals were put forward, all of them recorded by the secretary, Miss Nimat Jaroudi. The important thing is that the meeting was well organized and created the hoped-for atmosphere of awareness of the important women's questions.
