The Fourth Exhibition of the Children's Welfare Society

With the National Revival Committee:

The fourth exhibition of the Children's Welfare Society was held this year in association with the National Revival Committee, in keeping with the tradition the society has followed. The exhibition met with great success, both in the number of those taking part in it and in the number of visitors.

The Opening Ceremony:

The opening ceremony, under the patronage of the society's president, Mrs. Zahia Salman, was charming in the extreme, especially with the presence of the little ones of the child-welfare homes and their mothers, and the children of the Mar Elias Btina orphanage, and the presence of Najib Hankash, who spread over the party a spirit of gaiety and good cheer.

André Karam, director general of the Union for the Relief of Juveniles, spoke of the Lebanese charitable institutions and their part in the field of home economics, and the pressing need for expertise in this field.

As for Dr. Mounir Attieh, director of the Lebanese Industrial Institute, he insisted on establishing a standard of quality for national manufactures, and that the state should help to spread them, so that the seller is not driven to attribute the quality of his own workmanship to Europe, and so that a market is guaranteed for them.

Finally a discussion took place among four delegates — from the government institutes, the hospitals, and the home economics clubs of the Makassed and the Anglo-Saxon schools — on home economics and its aspects in Lebanon. Miss Suad Wakim directed the discussion. We concluded that the government must make home economics a foundation in its curriculum, and that hospitals and hotels need an expert in nutrition, so that their food may be healthful and economical.

Everyone took lunch in the courtyard of Beirut College, and at the close Dr. Najarian concluded the conference with a summary in which she observed that the development of our age compels us to make changes of living in our traditions, and that accordingly both man and woman need a special education in home economics.

Previous conferences concluded that home economics is not merely the management of houses but the making of homes: sewing, cutting and cooking will never represent home economics in its true sense; this field therefore rests upon three pillars — nutrition, the child's growth, and family life.

Child Week on the Radio:

The exhibition was preceded by the annual Child Week from Radio Lebanon; then came the money-raising campaign of "Child Day," a useful complement. Taking part in the radio week were the Ministries of Social Affairs, Education, Health and Information, the Municipality of Beirut, and a large number of institutions and of Beirut's various kindergartens.

Arab Mother's Day:

On March 21 last, the Mothers' Committee celebrated "Arab Mother's Day," a feast established by the Arab League in 1956. A simple celebration was held at the Social Cell, in which several institutions, mothers and children took part, and gifts were distributed to model mothers.
