A Cloth... for Your Table

You will doubtless fall in love with this brightly colored cloth for your new table, and it will please you that it was you who embroidered it with your own hands!

The way to work it is simple, as appears from following the drawings. You have only to procure half a yard of linen, together with threads in the following colors: light green, pink, brown, gold, yellow, and dark yellow.

Arrange the colors according to your own taste and follow the instructions step by step, and you will see with what ease and speed you finish the work, and spread it with pride on the table in your dining room.

Begin by embroidering the flower cluster at the center of the circle. Embroider all the stems first, as in drawing (1); then pass on to the flowers and embroider them in two stages, outer then inner, as in drawings 2 and 3—then the heart of the flower, as in drawing 4; after that embroider the green leaves, as in drawing 5; and finally the buds, as in drawing 6.

The second step: embroider the border, in the three stages shown in the drawing:

7 — Lay down a thread as padding.

8 — Embroider with “buttonhole stitch,” making it tight and close.

9 — Press the border on the wrong side and cut away the surplus cloth with a sharp cut.
