Our Blood for Lebanon

Dear reader:

The hearts of the world today drip blood over beloved Lebanon, which is passing through the most dreadful ordeal it has known in its history,

one that strikes down the lives of its innocent sons. Have you contented yourself, in showing your patriotic feeling, with silent anguish and prayer? Or have you answered the voice of conscience calling you to noble human giving?

Have you donated a handful of your blood to save the victims from death? Have you known the delight of giving, from the most sacred and precious thing you possess, for the most honorable and loftiest patriotic end??

If you have done so, then blessed be your sound national consciousness; if not, then hasten now to get in touch with the Lebanese Red Cross —

at the laboratory of the "Hôtel-Dieu" hospital

or with Mrs. Eva Serhal, telephone number 30181

lest this great human honor pass you by!

My sister, woman...

Wounded Lebanon needs your blood.

...Long live Lebanon!

For Your Beauty... Your Shoes Too

The injuries to which the toes of a woman's feet are exposed, and what follows upon them — "corns," deformed nails and nails growing into the flesh, protruding bone, swollen ankle, chafing of the back of the upper foot, etc. — all result basically from wearing shoes that are tight, or freakish in make and fashion. Here is what you must do to be saved from these conditions and to keep two beautiful, sound feet.

The truth, sadly, is that the majority of women have ailing feet; sound, beautiful feet are very rare indeed.

1 — Never try to make your feet smaller by forcing them into a tight shoe!! That is the worst affliction of all!

2 — Do not wear the same shoe two days running... do not do it even if the shoe is very comfortable and well fitted. Change one shoe for another every day; even if you own no more than two pairs, wear them by turns. In this way you rid your feet of being forced to take a fixed shape within the shape of one particular shoe.

3 — If you feel the two side edges of your shoe touching your ankles, see at once to putting an insole inside the shoe. And if you are obliged to wear the shoe as it is, because you cannot obtain the insole, then make the temporary insole yourself, by tracing your foot on a piece of stiff board (cardboard); cut it out and slip it into the shoe.

4 — Do the same thing if you feel the back of your foot being rubbed by the back seam of the shoe.

5 — There is no harm in wearing the high-heeled shoe, even one extravagant in its height... in that case, try not to stand much or walk long. And whenever the chance offers, draw back, sit down, and stretch out your legs in complete ease, so as to relieve the pressure on the tips of the toes.

6 — Finally, make sure that the shoe suits the shape of your feet in width and in length, and beware of wearing a loose shoe, for it exposes your feet to deformity. And rest assured that if you keep to these conditions, alongside caring for your toenails with complete care, you will have secured comfort for yourself and gained two beautiful feet... and remember that beautiful, clean feet have an importance no less than the beauty of the hands!

Leaves in the Wind

by Adonis

"...And you pause at verses about which you would like to question the poet, or question yourself, and you shake your head in reproof. This beautiful obscurity must not be explained — and it may not be capable of explanation. It is poetry.

We are all 'Adonis': an obscure phrase? I count it poetry."

Said Takieddine

•

"...Adonis has achieved thus far in Arabic poetry what only the few before him have achieved. He possesses an intellectual personality with which only the great poets are marked."

Khuzama Sabri

•

"...As for Adonis, he is a rich mine of poetic powers, and he will be one of the deepest and greatest voices ever raised in the whole history of Arabic poetry."

Badr Shakir al-Sayyab

•

"...He is the vanguard of his generation, beyond dispute."
